Setsubun Festival (The traditional end of winter ceremony)

We value traditional Japanese events at Kazenoko Hoikuen. We held a Setsubun Festival, the traditional end of winter ceremony, in February. Our staff played Oni (the Japanese ogre). The children learned the custom of throwing beans to ward off ogres at Setsubun through a quiz, and then threw beans at the Oni figure. We ate Ehoumaki (a sushi roll) for lunch. The children ate silently while facing the lucky direction and making a wish.

Here comes the member of staff dressed as the Oni!
Learning about Setsubun through a quiz.
It was lively!

The children threw beans at the Oni
made by the staff and beat it!

A little bit nervous, taking a picture with the Oni…
“Say, cheese!”

Today’s lunch is “Temaki zushi.”

We faced the lucky direction and ate it.
