Ÿ Cutting up fish
We went to watch the kitchen staff cut up freshly delivered fish. These children had mostly only ever seen cooked fish. They could see it at close range and peeked at it with their eyes wide open. One after another, the children questioned the kitchen staff, gWhat is inside the fishfs mouth?h, gWhatfs this?h, etc. The kitchen staff showed the fish well and answered each question politely. The children learned a lot from setting it up close and experiencing it. We would like to continue teaching children about appreciation for life and food.

Ÿ Helping (Washing rice)
In the young childrenfs class (3-5 years old), they take turns washing rice for lunch. When we cook rice in our classroom, we can smell the cooking rice and naturally it makes us hungry. We are looking forward to cooking rice every day.

Ÿ Helping (Fava bean)
We invited 5-year-old children who were interested in helping to shell fava beans for lunch. Some children had a lot of experience with shelling, so they put their strength into their thumbs and shelled, saying gOh, itfs fava bean!h and gThatfs how to do it!h even though the staff hadnft taught them. They imagined their favorite picture book, gThe bed of the Fava beanh and enjoyed the touch of the pod, saying gItfs a fluffy bed.h

Ÿ Helping (Peas)
gWho wants to help to prepare for lunch`?h Children who said gYes.h gathered and shelled the peas. Children were divided into two teams, the Helping team and the Playing in the garden team. Interested children tried shelling with staff. Children challenged it seriously while asking, gHow is it done?h After grasping the technique, they picked it up one after another and shelled efficiently. The next day, we enjoyed rice cooked with peas for lunch.
We all volunteered to help!

Ÿ Kiriboshi-daikon (dried radish strips)
4 and 5-year-old children made Kiriboshi-daikon. We sliced and quartered daikon radish and dried them under cover on the terrace for a month. Many children have used a knife at home, so they were willing to take part: gI can do it!h One of the classes made Kiriboshi-daikon at the end of the year. Some children got addicted to them because of the interesting texture.
If the Kiriboshi-daikon turns out well, letfs bring them to the kitchen to be made into a delicious lunch!
