Bringing in the New School Year
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.459 - April 2016

The beginning of April brings the pleasing sight of cherry blossoms in full bloom, all over the country. We had an entrance ceremony on April 1st, attended by 41 infants aged 0 and 1. Unfortunately, there were no open spaces for children over the age of 1 this year.

A child at this phase in life is in the state of rapid development, heading toward the age of resistance and the first stages of independence. For these children, every day is a day of great progress.

From the guardian’s perspective, they feel that they can control their child as they see fit, but that’s not true. With a 0-year-old child, the guardian’s intentions can be reflected onto them directly because it’s a time of unification between the mother and her child. But soon after they enter a daycare center, they turn 1.

Once they turn 1, before long, they try to develop their own will. That’s the beginning of an ego. Children develop faster in a place like a daycare center where they live in a group environment. When they become a year and a half old, they say “No” a lot. They are asserting themselves strongly.

When such things happen, and it is against the guardian’s wishes, they often get angry at their child and inhibit them with words like “No”, “Hurry up”, or “Do what you like!” They can’t help getting upset. But this is where they should show patience, accepting this as part of the child’s growth process. If they sympathize with their child’s feelings, saying “Oh, I understand. You didn’t like it, did you?”, the child returns to a state of obedience.

It’s said that there is little need to scold or get angry with them during this period. It’s necessary to warn them when their behavior might be harmful or threaten their safety, but other than that, I’d like you to raise them with love.

One educator said, “Each child is born with the capability to grow into a wonderful person.” Everyone begins at the same line when they are born. It’s like the starting line of a marathon. But in this long life, differences appear. Human beings don’t run on the same road, unlike in a marathon. Some people run like crazy whilst others stop on the way. And some choose a different path. That’s down to the person’s individuality. This individuality, or the foundation of a personality, has built up by the age of 3. It’s a very important period for them. This year too, let’s do our best under the goal of “Parents and the Daycare Center Raising Children Together”.
