Childcare Observation Day
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.457 - February 2016

Every year, we hold a childcare observation day for each class of older children toward the end of the shcool year from January to February. This year, out of the gate, the children of Class "Yama" (mountain) came down with the flu, so we were obliged to postpone it.

In other daycare centers, this observation day is similar to a school recital ("Seikatsu Happyōkai"). A school recital, so to speak, is usually held by all classes together, so guardians see their child as only one small part of the event.

Therefore, for the guardians, it is an insufficient report of their child's one year growth. Also, with such a big event, the staff will likely become too enthusiastic about making it into a big show. I feel bad seeing the children all nervous and hard at practice while their teacher is trying to fire them up.

More than anything, it is important for children to participate in their event in a lively and happy way. It's necessary for the child to feel that they are involved and express themselves freely even if they can't perform well.

We have held the childcare observation day for each class separately, in order to create an atmosphere in which the children don't need to feel nervous among their friends. We have continued this system for over 40 years now.

This year's theme is "Word Play", i.e. poetry reading. The 3 and 4-year-old children are going to read "Usagi no Denpō" ("A Rabbit's Telegram") and the 5-year-old children will read "Matsuri" ("Festival"). Both are poems by Kitahara Hakushu. His poems have rhythm, are easy to remember and fun to read.

Preschool children learn many words, understand abstract words and are able to memorize them. This is a period when picture books are read aloud to chilren, so it is a very meaningful activity for them to read a poem out loud themselves. I'm impressed children remember such a long poem, but their flexible brains are undergoing huge growth.

For any guardians who came to see it, we'd love to hear your thoughts.
