Sports Festival
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.454 - November 2015

Our Sports Festival was held at Komatsu Elementary School on Sat. 17th October. The day was sunny, warm and fresh; perfect for the event. All children over the age of 3 attended and seemed to have a lot of fun.

Last year, the children under the age of 1 had a hard time joining the event in a large open space where many people were gathered, so we made some changes to allow optional participation. This year, we have decided to allow 1-year-old children optional participation also.

Our future agenda for younger children is to find a way for them to participate with pleasure, and not force them into things.

Now, the major player of our sports festival all through the ages has been the 5-year-old group, Group “Zou” (elephant). The performance of Group “Zou” is always admired by the 3 and 4 year olds and becomes a big motivation factor for them. It also allows guardians to paint a mental picture of their future child.

This year’s dance performance by Group “Zou” was “Yosakoi Soran Rock”. It was fantastic. We were surprised that they were asked for an encore, which had never happened before. Above all else, they were probably the most surprised. This experience undeniably helps build self-belief and maturity also. Seeing it in this light, the sports festival is not a mere event but provides a turning point in their growth. It is perhaps necessary to include these kinds of objectives for children’s events.
.
We endeavor to create a fun sports festival for the children together with the guardians, and not just put it together by ourselves. I think we achieved that purpose this year.

We had the cooperation of many fathers for the preparations and clean up of the event. Many guardians participated in the program and enjoyed it, but besides all that, I believe it was a great day for the children. I hope for next year’s sports festival to be even more substantive, working under our motto “Daycare Center and Parents Raising Children Together”.
