Summer Camp
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.452 - September 2015

It’s been getting hotter and hotter because of global warming. The extreme summer heat exceeding 35℃ had continued everyday, but finally September has come.

During this hot summer, children enjoyed a moment of cool in our pool, with each class taking it in turns to have a dip. Children love to play in water. The 5-year-old children from the “Zou (elephant)” class and school-aged children from Jidokan also went overnight camping to our lake side facility “Hira Kaze no Ie” to experience the outdoors.

They enjoyed an unusual lifestyle, swimming in the beautiful big lake, singing round the campfire under the stars, playing with fireworks, having a barbecue at dinnertime and enjoying “Nagashi Somen” cold noodles.

This summer camp for the “Zou” class had been held as a 3 day 2 night summer event for a long time until now. Because it takes half a day to go and come back, it’s necessary to have one whole day in the middle to enjoy nature fully. I believe that the pleasant memory of this camping trip will be engraved in the hearts of all the children who took part.

However, we do need help from enough adults in order to provide protection to children from the dangers of water, because we play in and around a vast lake. We were somehow able to go on a 2 day 1 night camp safely this summer thanks to the cooperation of guardians and volunteers, but it is honestly quite difficult to secure enough volunteers. It’s also difficult for a large number of staff to go camping with the “Zou” class, due to the childcare necessary for the other children at our center.
.
Truthfully, we’d like to take these children who live in a concrete jungle out on a 3 day 2 night summer camp, to our retreats in Shiga and Tanba to experience nature by swimming in the lake, seeing fireflies and digging sweet potatoes. We need to seriously consider how we can make this happen.

We have a slogan “Parents and the Daycare Center Raising Children Together”. I hope we can continue to find ways in which to work together with the cooperation of guardians, instead of undertaking all this by ourselves.
