Language Development
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.450 - July 2015

There is nothing more mysterious than language development in human children. A baby shifts from babbling “Ah” or “Woo” to using single words when they become a year old. When they become closer to two years, they use two words, so we are able to have an understanding of their current condition.

When they become three years old, they start to use abstract vocabulary and not just name certain things. For example, they use rapid-fire words like “Many”, “Come!” or “Hurry!”

Almost no children learn words through the parents or adults around them patiently teaching them one by one. Learning and speaking come out of nowhere.

As they approach age 3, and during the age of 3, we wonder where and when a child has learnt things, because their vocabulary increases explosively.

Even though they don’t seem to be listening, children probably operate by using words they have heard the adults around them use; memorizing each word by considering its meaning according to the context. It is so amazing. This is the basic difference between mankind and animals.
.
From these examples of language development, we can see a child learns various things by themselves and not because they are taught. How great this is! In light of this, the important thing is how to cultivate a child’s motivation or energy to learn things by themselves.

A child shouldn’t be shriveled-up and lacking in energy. If they are positive and curious about everything, they make rapid progress.

I wish for guardians to raise their children open mindedly, with kindness and with ease, instead of scolding them often and causing them to become emotionally unstable.
