Childcare witht the "Teacher in Charge" System
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.446 - March 2015

The end of the year has come around once again. Over the year, I have used our newsletters to characteristics of our centers from various angles. It's impossible to share everything, but I’d like to use this opportunity to talk about our “teacher in charge”.

At our center, we provide childcare with a teacher in charge for classes of 0, 1 and 2-year old children. For example, if there are 9 children in a 0-year-old class, we put 3 teachers in charge. In that case, three teachers usually take care of 9 children. But at our center, one teacher takes care of 3 children.

This system is related to development during infancy period. An infant who is under the age of 3 develops emotionally based on a relationship of dependence with the mother. In a regular home, a child grows up in a one on one relationship, except in the case of twins. A child can mature with the foundation of a stable relationship of depedece with a specific person. However, as we can’t provide one on one childcare, we try to provide one teacher who can take care of as few children as possible.

As we give such childcare, if for example, when child A doesn’t feel good and cries, she tries to find her teacher in charge, even though there may be another teacher nearby. The teacher in charge is the replacement of her mother.

A teacher doesn’t ignore the child in the same class who is not her responsibility , but it is necessary to make the effort to strengthen the relationship between a child and their particular teacher in charge.

This system has broadened among daycare centers for infants. A class within a class, as it were.
