There are people who look at children and adults with disabilities with
disdain or discrimination. It’s because they see the disability as the
person’s personality, and that’s wrong. In this case, they interpret the
word “disability” as useless or unskilled. However, the person’s personality is different to their disability, and it’s necessary to understand them separately. Various inconvenient, unfortunate or unfavorable things occur to people with disabilities in their daily lives because of their disabilities. But, by toning down its inconveniences or disadvantages just a little bit, the effects of disability in that area will disappear. Looking at things from this perspective, most things reffered to as a “disability” could be said to be merely social. Therefore, the disability could be said to be one of social relationships. For example, it may be difficult for a person who is impared to go out, but if the environment becomes barrier free or there are elevators to make it easier to go out, then their disability would disappear. There are many people with intellectual disabilities who can’t use much language and have difficulty expressing their feelings. If people around them understand their feelings through their facial expressions and gestures, they should be able to communicate. This thinking toward children and adults with intellectual disabilities applies to childcare for children without disabilities too. |
