Childcare with Mixed Age Groups 2
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.441 - October 2014

Our childcare consists of a setting in which there are differences in age, so the relationships between the children are dynamic and not monotonous.

Firstly, our culture is passed on from the older children to the younger children. This is a big thing. The knowledge and sensibility of the older children have an impact on the younger children in their daily lives. A 4-year-old child learns language and the rules of play before you know it. It is not as though somebody teaches them. Likewise, a 3-year-old child can use complicated words and expand relationships with friends. And they develop social skills such as having patience or accommodating others from a place of self-centeredness.

Secondly, older children develop kindness and compassion towards younger children. The younger ones build admiration and a feeling of positivity towards the older children.

Children grow up in their environments, so they challenge one another in childcare with mixed age groups, in a way that is different from regular childcare which can be a bit like a drab competition.

It can be said to be similar to a sibling relationship in the home.
