Childcare with an Open Curriculum 2
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.437 - June 2014

The opposite of an Open Curriculum is “Set Childcare”. School textbooks can certainly be considered a part of “Set Teachings”. At school, teachings are based on textbooks. “Set Childcare” is the same in a daycare center or kindergarten, and the content of that day’s childcare is prepared and developed by a teacher in charge.

A child who is passive comes to the center and starts the day without knowing what it will consist of. “Set Childcare” is often carried out simultaneously for all children in the class. Depending on the center, everything is conducted together. For example, daily habits such as going to the bathroom by lining everyone up are adopted.

However, in the life of infants up to the age of 3, everything takes place in the world of “play”. There is the concern of hindering a child’s individuality and independence by providing disciplined childcare to all children in a class, in a way that is too heavily structured.

I believe it is desirable to introduce “Set Childcare” little by little after the age of 3 when they start to enjoy communicating with friends.
