What Kind of Child Do You Want Them to Be?
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.433 - February 2014

This theme of "What Kind of Child Do You Want Them to Be?" is of common interest to guardians who are raising children. How their child is going to grow up is both exciting and worrisome for guardians. They don’t think about their child’s future much when their child is small, because cuteness takes precedence. However, a picture of the future drifts through their mind when they gradually start to see their child’s character after the age of three. Their expectations, anxieties and worries increase more when their child becomes an elementary school student.

It is often said that the inconsistency between the wishes of the guardians and the feelings of the child often breaks to the surface during school age. Guardians try to raise their child with the wish and the expectation of what they want their child to be. But the child has different thoughts, and is sometimes reluctant or resistant. At this point in time, the guardians can’t influence their child’s decision according to their wishes.

Known as plasticity, like forming shapes by kneading clay, the soft plasticity period is limited to the time when the child is really young. A child’s self-awareness grows after the age of 18 months. They build themselves up little by little. They start to express their intentions by saying “No!” at quite an early stage.

If you think of it in this way, despite the wishes of the guardians for their child to grow up in a certain way, it’s almost impossible to influence or physically control them. It can be said that the will of guardians might have been too strong when a guardian-child relationship didn’t go well at puberty.

However, it’s not particularly good thing for guardians to have no ambitions for their child. A child grows up with an individual personality from birth. And it is important to support the child by respecting their independence, and not by pushing them.

Raising a child is an incredibly difficult thing.
