Happy New Year
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.432 - January 2014

Thank you for supporting our events last year. I wish you a happy New Year.

We held a study session for guardians at the end of last November. The lecture was based on “Bullying” by Kozaburo Nishibayashi from Osaka Art University, who is part of an independent committee addressing bullying in Otsu City. Many guardians participated, and they eagerly asked questions one after another.

We regularly hold meetings for guardians whose children are in elementary school, and the issue of bullying is often raised. According to reports so far, bullying starts to appear around the time children are in the third grade. It generally occurs earlier among girls than boys.

Bullying occurs endlessly with possessions being hid, tricks being played on their possessions, being ignoring, being kepting out of the loop, being humiliated in front of others, etc. The individual who is bullied has a very hard time. However, they keep it to themselves instead of telling their guardians, so it’s not easy to find out about this.

However, a child who has formed a habit from their childhood of talking about things frankly will discuss more things with their parents, comparatively speaking. If parents listen with half an ear and give lazy replies or tell their child they’ll listen to them later and put it off, their child gradually stops telling them what they originally wanted to share. Most of them keep silent when they reach puberty.

The parents of one child who committed suicide were separated, and the mother was not living with the child, so the child probably suffered without being able to talk to the father.

This bullying problem is highlighted in the news as distorted friendships, but the core is whether the parent-child relationship is providing the support for the child in their life. More than anything else, it is important to have an emotional connection, with the parents on their child’s side whatever happens.

It was announced that the number of outbreaks of “bullying” among elementary and junior high schools throughout the country was at 190,000 in 2012. It increases every year. I wish children who will assume the future of Japan to grow up healthy, both mentally and physically.

I wish you the best for 2014!
