A Childcare System which Provides a Teacher in Charge for Infants
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.429 - October 2013

We implemented a system of providing a teacher in charge for our infants’ class. For example, in a class of nine 0-year-old infants, 3 nursery staff are placed. In this case, it is not that the 3 nursery staff take care of all 9 children. Each staff member is in charge of 3 children. Therefore, among the 3 staff, the child’s closest and most trusted person is the teacher in charge of them.

It is meaningful that the teacher in charge is seen by the child as a replacement for their mother. During infancy, a child develops based on their relationship with their mother. Therefore, it is important to have a stable mother-child relationship. Originally, mothers deepened relationships with their child through domestic care: Feeding, changing diapers, carrying them and giving piggybacks.

If a mother needs to work and leaves her child in someone else’s care, this relationship weakens and could lead to feelings of instability in the child. We thought about this negative aspect, and came up with this system to try to minimize its effects. 3 nursery staff taking care of 9 children means each member of staff taking care of 9 children. That means a ninth of their attention per child, which is a big difference to a third of their attention in the new system.

We used to call this system “Group Childcare” and have used it for the last 40 years. Though the significance of this childcare hasn't been publicized much until now, I feel it is necessary for guardians to understand this feature of our childcare and support it.

Compared to childcare from 10 or 20 years ago, children now spend longer hours at the daycare center, and some of them spend more than 10 hours here from early morning until late at night. Therefore, this system that deepens the relationship between a particular nursery staff member and a particular child has more and more meaning.

I would like to communicate more clearly the results of this method at an upcoming class meeting with the guardians.
