Childcare that Moves Forward Together with the Guardians
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.425 - June 2013

We’ve worked on childcare under the motto “Parents and the Daycare Center Raising Children Together” for more than 50 years, with ongoing discussions with the guardian’s association. This comes from the idea of raising children with joint effort and cooperation, in a way that cannot be done by the center or guardian alone.

One of the ways in which this has taken shape, is the management of children’s bedclothes. Our center is probably the only one that doesn't require guardians to bring their child’s bedclothes when they enroll. In most places, guardians bring their child’s bedclothes to the center and bring it home on the weekend to clean. I believe this is a very big burden. In other cases, guardians need to rent bedclothes, which costs a lot.

In our center, we work with the cooperation of the guardians’ association, which manages bedclothes, and covers some of the expenses for its management. This is one of the activities which realizes our motto in a concrete way.

If we think of things in this way, although until now we have taken responsibility for our annual events, I think it might be good to hold these events together with the guardians.

For example, the camping trip for the eldest class and the trip to catch fireflies was a big burden for the limited number of staff. I was relieved when those events ended without incident. We hope for guardians to participate in such events like the sports festival and rice-cake making.

Events are essentially held seasonally in the home. Boys' Festival, Girls' Festival, the Koinobori Carp Streamer events, Star Festival, Bon Odori, local community festivals, moon viewing, and rice-cake making are all seasonal events. In addition to this, people go to the ocean, mountains or the river to have contact with nature, and to an amusement park with the family. Nowadays, people don’t hold seasonal events or go out with their family so much as in the past.

Daycare centers develop various events instead. It is very important for children to enjoy the transition of the seasons with events and have contact with nature through camping and field trips, in the process of growing up. For this, the combined effort and participation of the guardians when necessary is very desirable, and I hope for this to be the case.
