Annual Events
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.424 - May 2013

Every year, we review our annual events, the content of each activity, and make revisions or changes to something different. Last year, we changed the destination of the field trip for the 5-year-old children, from Mt. Tenno to our retreat in Tanba.

Some guardians complained about it. I think it’s probably because their sibling went to Mt. Tenno when they were 5 years old.

We also changed the participation of 0-year-old children for our Sports Festival from mandatory to voluntary.

We don’t need to hold the same event year after year, and always try to reflect and make improvements retrospectively. If we don’t, events get into a rut.

The meaning of an event in childcare is to be able to invigorate daily life; to break the routine from time to time. Therefore, we need to avoid an event for the sake of having an event. However, if we prioritize events and our purpose becomes about events in general, daily childcare is prone to fall behind this.

For example, some institutions hold pretty elaborate and noisy sports festivals and recitals, etc. This is very hard for staff to prepare for and I feel sorry for children who are put under strain. An event for the sake of appearance is detached from childcare aimed at the healthy development of children.

From that perspective, it’s very important to create an event that motivates children to participate and have fun. And it’s necessary to have the boldness to continuously change in the face of problems. It is not natural to hold the same thing year after year, as we plan, practice, inspect and reflect every time.

We might effect a change in this year’s events as needed, so we thank you for your understanding.
