Spring will Come Soon
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.422 - March 2013

These days, little by little we feel the breath of spring, even during these colder days. Fukinoto (butterbur sprout) and Tara-no-me (angelica-tree shoot) were sold at the supermarket just the other day, so I immediately bought them and made them into tempura. I also bought canola flower, cooked it, and enjoyed the scent of spring. Plants undoubtedly communicate the arrival of spring.

Over the past few years, I've been hearing news of our daycare center’s graduates, one after another. They seem to be active in society after graduating from pretty good schools, from what I gather. It’s been a long time since they graduated from our daycare center, but I hear everyone misses their time at our daycare center.

These young people spent five or six years here, and some of them went to our After School Care Program for several years after that. Many of them came here from infancy and spent most of their waking time here, so I'm sure there's no chance they'll forget this place. It’s sort of like a second home.

A couple of graduates from a certain year asked us if they could have an overnight stay reunion at our retreat house in Tanba this spring. They are going to collect people by word of mouth. They invited their teachers from the time they were here.

Our night stall festival is always attended by nostalgic graduates who have grown up. If they see staff they know, they have an animated conversation and enjoy meeting the reunion. Every summer after the festival, 10 to almost 20 graduates stand in the street or in our garden, having long conversations together.

I feel sorry that we haven’t had a chance to hold a reunion, even though I’ve always thought we should take their feelings seriously.

In three years, we’ll have our 60th anniversary since our center was established. I believe that these nearly 1500 graduates will be a great force in supporting the future of our center.

33 children will graduate this spring. We are delivering children towards a bright future. Spring will come at any moment. The spring that lets children spread their wings is coming.
