Happy New Year
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.420 - January 2013

It’s been very cold since the end of the year. In fact, it was so cold we were all hunched over in the first three days of the New Year. However, the New Year was quiet, and I hope you have had peaceful days with your family.

Many fathers participated in our center’s events and guardians’ meeting last year, and it was very different compared to 20, 30 years ago. I am delighted by this. Child-raising is not only for mothers. The couple has to share responsibilities, and fathers need to take equal responsibility for child-raising as well as housework. The reason why such an idea has spread among guardians is actually because mothers participate in the working world as career women.

The results of the opinion polls on a gender-equal society was disclosed by the Cabinet Office on December 15th. The results of the poll were 52% in favor and 45% in opposition to the idea of a traditional household where the husband works outside, and the wife stays at home. It is surprising that there is a 10% increase in favor compared to the poll three years ago.

It’s said that politicians, executive directors and managerial positions have overwhelmingly less women compared to other advanced countries. This structure of a male-oriented Japanese society was an issue of public awareness after all.

I was surprised at the appearance of a female president in neighboring Korea, but when I look at Japanese politicians, I think such a thing could only occur in Japan several decades into the future.

More than anything, it is vital to beat the old system and solve the child-raising problem in order for women to be more active in society. It is important to lighten the burden of child-raising for women as much as possible. Daycare centers are a social resource to provide help for that, but the core of this change will come from the working guardians who raise children. And their work will change the awareness of people as a whole.

I wish you a Happy New Year!!
