Enjoying Autumn
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.418 - November 2012

We’ve suffered the oppressive summer heat until not long ago, but recently we’ve started to feel the depth of autumn through the cooler mornings and evenings. The trees have started to change their colors, and these daily changes bring us a lot of joy.

Each season: Spring, summer, autumn, and winter, has a different flavor, but isn’t it interesting to revisit the joy and pleasure of autumn. We call it the “season of hearty appetites” or the “season horses get fat”, and it’s the season of delicious and plentiful food. Many seasonal foods are included in our lunchtime menu, and the children’s appetites seem to grow.

If we talk of seasonal pleasures, it has to start with new rice. Black beans harvested from the Tanba area are only available at this time of the year and is another one of the pleasures. Autumn lets us appreciate the appetizing daikon radish. Chestnuts and persimmons are harvested only at this time of the year too. The list is endless.

People want to move their bodies in autumn in this season of exercise and sports. We just finished our Sports Festival, but we are still planning field trips for each class and the annual sweet potato digging event for the infant class. It’s an important time of year to be active outdoors. It might be nice to go out to places rich in nature as a family during your days off too.

And autumn is a season for putting on extra layers of clothing. It can be said that autumn is a season to enjoy being fashionable. It is very important to choose clothes with consideration for certain colors and shapes to show our appreciation for beauty. We wish for even a small child to develop these kinds of aesthetic senses in daily life.

Well, autumn is a time to prepare for the survival of the cold winter, for us as well as the animals. We want to help prepare the children for the winter by building up their health. Let’s try to get into a good regular lifestyle rhythm, get enough sleep, and eat well in the mornings and evenings with the goal of not catching a cold.

Lastly, it can be said that autumn is a season to enjoy reading. I feel that it is very important to read picture books to children. Children who love picture books when they are little, grow up endowed with intellect and rich in emotion. During these long autumn nights, we would like you to make the time to read picture books with your child. These days, people say that winter follows summer, instead of autumn. Let’s enjoy the short autumn while we can.
