Sports Festival
From “Kazenoko Letter” No.417 - October 2012

The Sports Festival season is coming up. The sight of children being active with all their strength under the autumn sky is pleasing to the eye.

We have been improving the content of the sports festival little by little for the past 30 or so years. The changes are probably hard to recognize, as we don’t make major changes in one go. However, if you look back every 5 – 10 years, there have been some big changes.

The purpose of these changes is to break away from the general sports festival mold where value is placed on showing perfect results to the audience. The sports festival which only seeks perfection pushes children through scolding and forces repeated practice, and results only in the self-satisfaction of the teacher. Such sports festivals are incompatible with the natural education of young children, so we have sought our own style of sports festival.

However, immediate reform might have caused a feeling of discomfort, so we have changed it gradually over time. Basically, our goal was to create a children-driven sports festival. We want a sports festival not only for the children but also for the guardians to enjoy.

In concrete terms, a sports festival is made up of games which young children want to play, and the goal for infants is to join the festival with their guardians. But this year, we haven’t set up games for infants in Class Shiro (White). They will be able to observe and participate by joining any games that they want. It had been a problem for a long time, because the infants in Class Shiro had just started to walk, so it’s been difficult for them to take part in a big schoolyard. Consequently, there will be no compensation day for Class Shiro and we’ll provide childcare as usual the next day.

Our style of sports festival is for everyone to enjoy together, so we’d like you to give us your help and cooperation, and let’s all liven up the event together. I hope it will be sunny on the day!
